Description: The environment plays an important role in quality programs. The ITERS
and ECERS are tools used to rate environmental elements determined to enhance quality
in infant, toddler, and early childhood classrooms. This project aims to rate an infant,
toddler, or preschool classroom environment, providing scores and recommendations
based on your observations. Each student is to work on this project individually.
Directions:
1. Choose only ONE of the tools: EITHER the ITERS OR the ECERS
1. Familiarize yourself with the specific elements you will be observing.
2. Training on how to use the rating scales will be provided in class.
3. Choose one classroom to observe. (S3a) (S4b) (S7)
1. Take time with the observations. Good observations must be done in a timely
manner.
2. Rate each criterion where applicable on the official scoring sheet and submit
it. (S4c)
3. Submit an analysis that includes:
1. At least 5 detailed photographs of the room observed with or without children
in the classroom. (S7)
2. The scored sheet and recommendations for improvement or supporting
evidence for EACH rating scale item scored satisfactorily. Recommendations
must be thoughtful and provide concrete suggestions for improving or

3. Describe your experience using the assessment tool, including challenges and
ease of administration. Based on the score, include plans for future
