Intellectual Disability is a term that is used to refer to a person's limited ability to function normally evidenced in cognitive functioning and skills. Intellectual Disabilities develop in the period before a birth to eighteen years of age and are caused either by disease, a problem in the brain or injury. In relation to IQ, one of the three criteria for diagnosing a person with Intellectual Disability is having an IQ below 70-75. Some of the functioning impairments caused by Intellectual Disability include; intellectual functioning deficits such as reasoning and abstract thinking and adaptive functioning deficits which significantly affect a person's ability to conform to the sociocultural standards for independence and social responsibility.
